Album & Cover
Going for the One is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Yes, released on 15 July 1977 by Atlantic Records. The album was recorded in Montreux, Switzerland after the band took a break in activity for each member to release a solo album and their 1976 North American tour. It marks the departure of keyboardist Patrick Moraz and the return of Rick Wakeman, who had left to pursue his solo career after musical differences surrounding Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973). In a departure from their previous three albums, Going for the One features shorter and more direct songs written without a unifying theme or concept, and saw Yes record with new producers, engineers and cover designers.
.Similar to Fragile, it features stunning vocal harmonies balanced by thrilling guitar playing. It topped the U.K. charts and reached #8 on the Billboard 200. It includes the hit singles “Wonderous Stories” and “Going For The One.”

This cover was a real departure for Yes and the Roger Dean graphics but Jon Anderson and Steve Howe were stressing the importance of ‘spiritual energy points’ around the body called ‘Kundalini’ so Storm Thorgerson suggested the naked man and the band liked it. Richard Manning explains the process: This is a triple opening sleeve, about thirty seven inches wide. I mounted a piece of Double Weight Photographic paper to accommodate the album size and washed in a light blue with Photo Dye. With a large bowl Airbrush I sprayed a gradated dark to light blue with Photo dye. On the right side (i.e. the front cover), with Windsor and Newton Permanent White Gouache I airbrushed some clouds. The seven prints of the buildings were cut out and the edges thinned and painted blue. Where each building appeared to overlap these were butt joined. The naked figure was cut out and the back stripped away and sanded to give a very thin edge. The edge was greyed and then montaged with Columbia Cement. The coloured lines were added at the printing stage. http://www.richardmanning.co.uk/hipgnosis-album-cover-art/yes-going-for-the-one–1976/45
