Album & Cover
Living in a Fantasy is the eighth album by the English singer-songwriter, Leo Sayer, and was released in August 1980. Although the album was not a huge commercial success, the single that it spawned, a cover version of Bobby Vee’s “More Than I Can Say”, spent five weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1980 and January 1981. Sayer’s version of the song was certified a gold record by the RIAA.
According to Aubrey Powell, Leo’s manager Adam Faith asked Hipgnosis to design a cover to reignite Leo Sayer’s career with an image far removed from the clown outfit he was known for in the seventies. They created a collage of torn pieces of Xerox paper, pasted together in the shape of Leo’s head and body, while his face appears in the middle of his chest, like a printed T-Shirt. Unfortunately it didn’t reignite his career.
