10cc – How Dare You (1976)

Biography
10cc are an English rock band founded in Stockport who achieved their greatest commercial success in the 1970s. The band initially consisted of four musicians – Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme – who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the name “10cc” in 1972. 10cc featured two songwriting teams, one “commercial” and one “artistic”. Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-songwriters, who created most of the band’s accessible songs. By way of contrast, Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an Art School sensibility and cinematically inspired writing. Every member of 10cc was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer, and the writing teams frequently switched partners, so that Godley/Gouldman or Creme/Stewart compositions were not uncommon. After Godley and Creme left the band in 1976, Gouldman and Stewart were the main creative forces behind 10cc. Stewart left the band after 1995 and Gouldman continues to lead a touring version of 10cc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10cc

Album & Cover
How Dare You! is the fourth album by British band 10cc, it included UK hit singles “I’m Mandy Fly Me” and “Art for Art’s Sake”. It was also the last 10cc album by the original line-up of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme, with the latter two departing to work on their own musical projects (as Godley & Creme), and eventually becoming music video pioneers.

The idea for this cover according to Aubrey Powell came from a song on the album, ‘Don’t Hang Up’ which used the old fashioned phones with a dial tone, long before the mobile phone. Writing about  ‘How Dare You’ in – For The love Of Vinyl- Graham Gouldman, the voice on the track is Kevin Godley’s wife Sue saying ‘Hello’ and the track ends with the phone being cut off. The burring sound was not a telephone but a slowed down electric toothbrush. The band are also in the centrefold photograph along with friends of the band. Richard Manning describes the process: These Dye Transfer prints were cut diagonally at 45 degrees, the white edges were dulled with a mid-tone grey then butted together. Not a lot to do, remove a few spots, same on the back cover images. The double opening centre spread was a crowd of people at a party in a room of a house. Again, just general spot and clean up. http://www.richardmanning.co.uk/hipgnosis-album-cover-art/10cc-how-dare-you–1975/40
