Harlequin – Love Crimes(1980)

Biography
Harlequin is a Canadian rock band that formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1975. The band is best known for their hit singles “I Did It for Love”, “Thinking of You”, “Superstitious Feeling”, and “Innocence”. In 1975, Winnipeg bassist Ralph James formed Harlequin upon recruiting vocalist George Belanger, guitarist Glen Willows, keyboardist Gary Golden, and drummer David Budzak. The band began recording demos and travelling to Toronto to perform in the local bars and clubs. It was in one of these small bars in Toronto that Harlequin were discovered by representatives of Jack Douglas, the producer of Aerosmith, John Lennon, and Patti Smith, after they tried to see another band in a larger bar downstairs, but could not gain admittance due to a sell-out crowd. These two individuals later became the producers of the first album, Victim of a Song. They were Lachlan MacFadyen and Kent Dobney… former bandmates of Jack Douglas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlequin_(band)

Album & Cover
Love Crimes is the second release by Harlequin. It yielded two hits ‘Thinking of you’ and ‘Innocence’, their biggest hit to date.

Richard Manning describes the making of the cover: Both front and back images were black and white photo prints and hand tinted with Photo dyes. The pencil drawing was by Humphrey Ocean and a photographic copy made. The back cover was sepia toned, the front cover was not. On the Front Cover I masked the interior with transpaseal and combined soft airbrushing with touches of colour with the Sable brush to keep the light and dark tones. The girls legs and steering wheel I didn’t bother to mask and washed dye in with the Sable brush. The background behind the windows I treated the same and with the Sable brush added little touches of varying colour randomly The back cover was treated in a tighter way. Each component was masked separately with Transpaseal and photo dye applied. The red of the handbag, glasses and lipstick was washed in using the Sable brush to give the depth of colour. The blue ticket and seat were airbrushed. The revolver in the handbag had touches of colour with the Sable brush as did the money. The band picture was virtually untouched except for one or two touches of colour with the Sable brush. http://www.richardmanning.co.uk/hipgnosis-album-cover-art/harlequin-love-crimes–1980/38
